OFFICIAL MOGA 2017 COMPETITION RULES
Events associated with MOGA 2017 will run from Thursday, April 20th, through Sunday afternoon, April 23rd. However, the MOGA event itself and in particular the competitions will be held on Saturday, April 22nd, only. The complete weekend agenda will be posted and updated on the MOGA website.
Geocaches will be available at Tuttle Creek State Park, and throughout the local communities. Non-competitors will have access to all permanent caches during the competitions, but the punch containers will be in a different location than the permanent caches.
Main Course Competitions
There will be two competition courses — one for Individual Competition, and one for Team Competition. We will hide 30 punches on each course. The punches will be tethered in small camouflaged containers in and around Lazy T Ranch. Each competitor will receive a topographical map of the area with all punch containers included. The topographical maps will help competitors navigate from punch to punch.
There will be no driving allowed at any time during the competition. Using a vehicle of any kind (to include animal) will result in disqualification! ONLY FOOT TRAFFIC IS ALLOWED DURING THE COMPETITION.
There may be more punches than you can find in the allotted time. You must decide how you will hunt them, which ones to complete, and how you can get the most in the shortest amount of time. Do not trespass outside Lazy T Ranch property no matter how close you are to a punch.
All rules must be followed at all times. Course monitors and water points will be stationed along the course. DO NOT ALTER THE PUNCH PLACEMENT OR THE PUNCH CONTAINERS!
When you find a punch, you must punch your scorecard in the appropriate place next to the correct punch number. The punches and scorecard will be numbered the same. Each competition will last 2.5 hours. You must find as many punches as you can during this time. All set rules and off-limits areas apply. Competition registrations cost $5.00 per individual or team member. Please pre-register for the competition by going to the MOGA website. You must register yourself to attend the event, then purchase an Individual or Team Competition Registration. To register a team, one person from the team must prepay for the entire team and indicate their team name, their team members’ caching names and ages. For those who do not pre-register, you will have to register and sign a waiver at the event, then purchase a competition registration. Last-minute competition fees will be accepted at these times
Last-minute registrations will be accepted at MOGA Central on Friday, April 21st, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Individual Competition – Men’s and Women’s

The Individual Competition will be divided into age and gender groups. Please make sure you register for the correct gender and age during registration.
The following men’s age groups will be awarded 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) place geocoins at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening.

The following women’s age groups will be awarded 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) place geocoins at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening.

The Individual Competition will consist of individuals looking for 30 punches.
We will have a shotgun start at 8:00 am and the finish time will be at 10:30 am. You must find as many punches as you can during this time.

Two-person teams and four-person teams will compete at the same time on the same course. Teams must consist of no more than 4 players (male or female) for the 4-person event and no more than 2 players (male or female) for the 2-person event. If you want to compete in the 4-person event with less than 4 people, please understand you will be at a disadvantage. Each player with the 4-player team should have their own GPS unit. If you do not, it would be a huge disadvantage, as 4-person teams will often split up to find as many caches as possible. Two-person teams may share a GPS unit or they can both have one, as long as they cache together. You will only have one punch card and hint sheet.
Each team must register as a team, listing all players. You can have one reserve player in the unlikely event someone is unable to compete. Ten minutes prior to your event starting time, no changes or substitutions will be allowed.
Two-person teams will have to find as many punches as they can in a 2.5 hour time limit. You will start at 1:30 PM and must complete the course no later than 4:00 PM. Both team members must stay together to complete the course. Each 2-person team will be given one score card with hints that must be punched in the correct square. These punches will be inside of small camouflaged containers. Make sure you punch the proper area of the card, to get credit for that find. Your team finishes when BOTH members return. 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) place geocoins will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening to the winners of the following age groups.

The average ages of both team members will determine your age group.
Four-person teams will have to find as many punches as they can in a 2.5 hour time limit. You will start at 1:30 pm and must complete the course by 4:00 pm. You may split up to complete the course. At the starting point, your team will be given 4 score cards with hints. Everyone must make sure they punch the proper area of the card, to get credit for that find. Duplicate punches will not be counted. If you split up, make sure each person in your group understands that all 30 punches should be the goal of the team, and each member should have a portion of the 30 punches assigned to them by the team captain. This will eliminate duplicate punches. These punches will be inside of small camouflaged containers. Your team finishes when ALL members return. 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) place geocoins will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening to the winners of the following age groups.

If three team members fall in one of the three age groups, that is the group you will compete in. If your team does not have three team members in the same age group, then the average ages of all team members will determine your age group.
Any person or team that is observed using a vehicle or animal of any kind during the competitions will be disqualified. Any person or team found altering a punch container or course in any way will be disqualified and asked to leave the event. Anyone coming back after their deadline will be docked 1 punch for each 5 minutes late, up to 20 minutes. After 21 minutes, you will be disqualified. Losing your punch card will result in disqualification!
The individuals or teams (2- or 4-person) who find the most punches in the 2.5 hour time limit will win their age division. If there is a tie, then the team with the shortest time wins. If there is still a tie, a tiebreaker will be used. We will have a 52-card deck and the winners will cut the deck, high card wins (Ace high). Anyone coming back after their deadline will be docked 1 punch for each 5 minutes late, up to 20 minutes. After 21 minutes, you will be disqualified.

Continuing a tradition started at MOGA 2013, there will be a competition for those who want to exercise their brain or do not have the physical ability to run the course. You will start at 11:00 am and must finish by 1:00 pm. You will compete in 2-person teams and will be given a packet of puzzles to solve. No electronic devices will be allowed and you cannot leave the room with any of the puzzles.
The object is to have the most correct puzzles at the end of 2 hours. 1st (GOLD), 2nd (SILVER) and 3rd (BRONZE) place geocoins will be awarded to each winning team member at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening.
Codebreaker’s Challenge registrations cost $10.00 per team. Please pre-register for the competition by going to the MOGA website. You must register yourself to attend the event, then purchase a Codebreaker’s Challenge Registration. To register a team, one person from the team must prepay for the entire team and indicate their team name, their team members’ caching names and ages. For those who do not pre-register, you will have to register and sign a waiver at the event, then purchase a competition registration.
Last-minute Codebreaker’s Challenge Competition fees will be accepted at MOGA Central on Friday, April 21st, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
MOGA 2016 Disability Competition
This is a GPS competition designed for individuals with mobility impairments.
This untimed competition is open to any person with limited mobility, including individuals with wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, scooters, canes, or other assistance, or no assistance.
The competition will be held completely on a mostly flat, paved surface, accessible to wheelchairs and similar devices.
There will be 15 locations to be visited. At each station, there will be a punch tethered in small camouflaged containers in and around Tuttle Creek State Park. Each competitor will travel to each point to find the container and to punch their card with the correct punch. Competitors may have to exit the hard top for a very short distance but will still be fairly level ground.
- Required Equipment:
-Handheld GPS or other device with GPS capability
- Optional equipment:
-Wheelchair or other mobility assistance devices
-Other equipment needed due to disability
- Forbidden equipment:
-Rangefinders, such as might be used for golf.
-Any device with Internet access, maps, or aerial photos. If a device such as a phone or laptop must be used due to a disability, the device must be approved by competition officials, and the contestant must agree not to use any apps that would give them a competitive advantage.
If the competitor has a disability that requires another person to assist them, the assisting person must also register and submit a liability waiver. The person assisting may help move the competitor between stations and assist in operating other equipment, but may not assist in identifying the correct punch. Assistants will sign an agreement to limit assistance to non-competitive support.
Service animals are welcome!
Due to safety concerns, no motorized vehicles will be permitted on the course, unless absolutely necessary due to disability and with prior approval of the competition director. Single-person electric scooters are permissible.
- Use of range finders, maps, aerial photos, or Internet access is grounds for disqualification.
- Assistants must not help with the actual identification of the correct sign and punch, but are limited to assisting with non-competitive support.
- All park rules must be followed at all times. Course monitors will be stationed along the course. DO NOT ALTER THE PUNCH PLACEMENT!
- Competition registrations cost $5.00 per individual. There is no cost for an assistant. Please pre-register for the competition by going to the MOGA website. You must register yourself to attend the event, then purchase a Disability Course Registration. Assistants must register separately.
- Competitors and assistants must sign waivers.
- Start times will be staggered in order to avoid bunching up around stations.
- Stations may be visited in any order. However, it is recommended that they are visited in sequence. Lower numbered stations are designed to be easier than higher numbered stations.
Scoring and Awards
This competition is untimed.
1 point will be awarded for each correct punch. Punches must be in the correct box on the punch card in order to be counted. If a punch is disallowed, competitor may appeal to the competition director. Decision of the competition director is final.
Awards will be given for the top three scorers in each age division. In case of a tie, duplicate awards may be given; in event there are more winners than ordered medals a subsitute coin will be mailed at a later time, but we will utilize a coin for ceremonial and picture opportunities.
MOGA 2017 Bike Course (with Wherigo)
This is a GPS competition designed for bicycle use. We have concluded the use of Wherigo would be the most effective and fair way to allow as many competitors as possible to participate in this event. You will be able to complete this at your own leisure and it will have no set start time. To participate you will need to know how to work Wherigo caches, and a device capable to play the cartridge. This is a requirement. Competition registrations cost $5.00 per individual. Once you have the Wherigo cartridge, you may participate at your own will. Participation will be limited to 2 hours with the objective to enter as many zones on the course as you can while also fulfilling a secondary objective (most likely recording something that you must solve at the location). You must have your participation finished by 4pm Saturday and details turned into the MOGA store at MOGA headquarters. You may provide your own bike; however, 1 person per bike and it cannot have a motor of any kind. The City of Manhattan’s Green Apple Bike system can also provide bikes for use. The course will have monitors throughout, and anyone caught not utilizing a bike or participating in any manner deemed illegal will be disqualified.
MOGA 2017 Cache Builder Competiton
This competiton is for those that brings the excitement of finding a Geocache to all.
This is a cache creation competition designed to allow these builders to show off and impress all geocachers. We have decided to have a fan and secret cacher judge Geocache building competition.
We are limiting this to the first 15 pre-registered participants to present their best geocache. Pre-registration will close on April 14th or when all 15 slots are filled; any one wishing to participate after all slots are filled will be placed on a waiting list. All geocaches of registered participants must be turned in no later then 8 pm Friday night (April 21). Competitors will have the option to leave their cache at the site and listed as a permanent cache or returned to them Saturday night at the end of closing ceremonies. The cost per entry is $5 to be entered into the competition. All costs of build will be on the competitor. The top 3 vote-getters will be awarded a medal.
Everyone will recieve a voting form in their registration packet and will have an opportunity to visit all participanting caches and rank them from 1-15. Those not attempted will not be in their rankings. All sheets must be turned in by 6pm on Saturday, these will be tallied for 60% of final vote. In the event of a tie; winner will be decided by the cache that recieved more #1 votes.
For the individual competition, in each, male and female division, special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE geocoins will be awarded to the first, second, and third place competitor in each age bracket.
For the team competitions (2-person and 4-person), special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE geocoins will be awarded to each competitor in the first, second, and third place teams of each age bracket. The Minnesota Cup will be awarded as well to the 4-person team that has the overall best score, regardless of age bracket.
For the Handicap competition, special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE geocoins will be awarded to each competitor in the first, second and third place. If there is a tie, multiple awards will be awarded.
For the Codebreaker’s Challenge special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE geocoins will be awarded to each competitor in the first, second, and third place teams.
For the Bike Competition, special GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE, geocoins will be awarded to each competitor in the first, second, and third place.
